Six Days and Eighteen Teams at Gainbridge Fieldhouse
The 30th TIAA Big Ten Conference Men's Basketball Tournament runs March 9 to March 14, 2027 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The conference published the format in its 2026-27 men's basketball schedule release on September 16, 2026.
The tournament opens Tuesday, March 9 with two games among the number 15 to 18 seeds. Wednesday carries four contests, when Tuesday's winners join seeds 9 to 14 in the second round. Seeds 5 to 8 open on Thursday. The top four seeds begin play in Friday's quarterfinal round. The semifinals fall on Saturday and the championship game closes the week on Sunday. CBS Sports carries the semifinals and the final for the 30th consecutive year, and both games stream on Paramount+.
A Group's Stay Length Follows the Bracket
A fan group books a stay of unknown length. Six days of tournament basketball produce six possible exit dates, and the bracket decides which one applies.
A group following a top-four seed plans around Friday, Saturday and Sunday. A group following a 15 seed plans around Tuesday and Wednesday.
The conference release names the venue, the seed structure and the broadcast partners. It carries no hotel block, no group rate and no allotment for 2027. Ask the school's athletic department and ticket office whether a school-issued fan block exists, then size your own hold against the earliest plausible exit.
Write the Cut-Off Date Into the Contract
The cut-off is the date in the contract by which reservations or the rooming list must be in. A contract that states the cut-off as a calendar date removes the argument later.
For a March 9, 2027 arrival, the cut-off on a five-night hold lands in February. Confirm the specific date in the contract. Confirm whether one date governs the whole block or each night carries its own.
Ask how the hotel classifies Friday, March 12 and Saturday, March 13. Peak nights can carry earlier cut-offs than the nights beside them.
Work backward from the cut-off to your own deadline for collecting names. An alumni office that needs two weeks to return a list sets its internal deadline in mid-January.
The Attrition Clause That Fits a Bracket
Attrition is the penalty for using fewer room nights than the contract commits. Blocks, a room-block software vendor, publishes a pickup floor that often opens at 80 percent of the block. The vendor's guides measure that floor on a cumulative room-night basis at performance, and set damages net of the hotel's saved costs.
Take an illustrative hold of 50 rooms on each of the five nights from March 9 to March 13, with checkout on Sunday, March 14. The block commits 250 room nights, and an 80 percent floor sets the obligation at 200.
A group whose team loses on Wednesday picks up 50 rooms on March 9 and 50 on March 10. The shortfall against the 200-room-night obligation reads 100 room nights. A contract that measures each night against its own floor reads the same pickup as 120 room nights short. At the vendor's illustrative rate of $189, the two tests price the shortfall at $18,900 and $22,680. A clause that bills at lost profit, which the vendor puts at roughly 75 percent of the rate, cuts those figures to about $14,175 and about $17,010.
Ask which measurement the hotel writes into the contract. Cumulative measurement spreads the exposure across the stay. Per-night measurement concentrates it on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
The Release Dates to Negotiate
Ask for review dates at 90, 60 and 30 days before arrival, with rooms above the group's current pickup released without penalty. The vendor's guides pair the release with a resell credit against the rooms returned.
Rooms released before the peak can still be sold by the hotel. Rooms held to arrival cannot. A planner who waits for the bracket pays for the nights the group has left.
Only four schools play on Tuesday, March 9. Eight remain in the building on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, four on Saturday and two on Sunday. That count comes from the published seed structure and the six-day calendar. Ask the hotel which of those nights it prices as peak.
What to Put in the Request
The groupRooms platform lists 273 hotels in its Indianapolis directory, describes bookings of 10 or more rooms as its scope, states that hotels typically respond within 24 to 72 hours, and reports 103,857 hotels across 46 states. Those figures are the company's own published claims.
The venue publishes 7,100 hotel rooms downtown and 4,700 rooms connected to the Indiana Convention Center by skywalk, with more than half of downtown's rooms within blocks of the center and Lucas Oil Stadium. The destination bureau counts 12 hotels and 5,200 rooms connected. Gainbridge Fieldhouse is a separate downtown venue, and the connected inventory is the closest published pool.
Put five dates in the request: arrival March 9, release March 14, the cut-off you want, the review dates you want, and your deadline for collecting names. Ask each property for its per-night rate, its per-night floor, and whether unused comps convert to a credit on the master account.
The Questions to Ask Before You Sign
Ask whether attrition is measured on cumulative room nights or on each night. Ask whether the block can be reduced without penalty at a review date, and which dates those are. Ask how the master account splits room and tax from incidentals.
The 2027 tournament offers a group six days of basketball and five nights of exposure. The contract terms decide which of those nights the group pays for.
