The Game and Its Window
The 2026 Discover Big Ten Football Championship Game runs Saturday 5 December at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. The conference sets kickoff at 8:00 p.m. ET, broadcast nationally on FOX. The conference calls it the 16th annual championship game and states the venue has hosted the title game annually since 2011.
The stadium publishes the day's gate schedule. The south parking lot opens at 8:00 a.m. for ADA parking, the ticket office at 4:00 p.m., the gates at 6:00 p.m., and kickoff at 8:00 p.m. The clear bag policy applies, the stadium is cashless, and every person entering needs a ticket regardless of age.
Big Ten Fan Fest presented by Dr Pepper runs at the Indiana Convention Center on Friday 4 December and Saturday 5 December. The conference assigns more than 200,000 square feet to interactive games, entertainment, Big Ten merchandise, giveaways, food and beverages. A group attending both events needs the Friday night and the Saturday night.
The weekend caps nearly two weeks of Big Ten activity in Indianapolis. The inaugural Big Ten Volleyball Tournament runs 20 to 25 November at Fishers Event Center.
The Conference Points Groups at a City Directory
The Big Ten championship page carries one hotel link. It reads Hotel Info, described as information about hotels in and around Indianapolis, and it resolves to the Visit Indy city hotel directory. The conference publishes no event room block, no housing bureau and no rate page.
The venue runs a second list. Lucas Oil Stadium's Hotels and Lodging link opens a Visit Indy reservations page for the stadium. That page carries 64 properties, each with a stated distance from the stadium. Thirty-one sit within one mile and fourteen within half a mile. It publishes no rate for any of the 64.
What a Group Should Confirm in Writing
With no block to negotiate against, the terms are the leverage a group holds. Blocks, a room-block software vendor, describes common practice on each one. Those descriptions are vendor guidance rather than terms posted by an Indianapolis hotel.
Start with the cutoff date. Blocks puts a typical cutoff about 30 days before arrival, flexing between 21 and 30 days and reaching 45 days in peak season. Its guide states that nights the hotel expects to fill at top rate carry earlier, stricter cutoffs than the shoulder nights flanking them. Ask for a calendar date rather than a count of days, and ask whether one date covers the whole stay.
Then the pickup floor and the basis it is measured on. Blocks puts the standard floor at 80 percent of blocked room nights. Its worked example holds 100 rooms on each of three nights, commits 300 room nights and reads a pickup of 210. The aggregate shortfall is 30 room nights, or $5,670 at the guide's $189 rate. A lost-profit clause at roughly 75 percent of the rate cuts that figure to about $4,253.
The same example shows why the basis matters. The middle night fills at 100 rooms while the two flanking nights lag at 55 each. Measured per night against an 80-room floor, the two shoulder nights carry 50 room nights of exposure, or $9,450 at $189. Measured cumulatively, the peak night carries the block. Ask which basis your contract uses.
Then the release dates and the credit. Blocks describes review dates at 90, 60 and 30 days out, at which a group hands back rooms it can see it will not fill, and it pairs that term with a rate protection clause. It also describes a resell or mitigation credit, so unfilled rooms the hotel resells come off the shortfall.
Finally the money movement. Ask for bedroom and tax to route to the group master account with incidentals settled by each guest at departure, and for the right to review the hotel's pickup report before final payment. Add force majeure protection and ask whether any complimentary room accrual counts against your own pickup.
The Shoulder Nights
A Friday-to-Sunday stay is a two-night block. The shoulders either side are Thursday 3 December and Sunday 6 December. Ask whether the group rate extends to those nights and whether a two-night minimum applies over the weekend.
The teams are decided by the regular season, which closes in late November. The conference put public tickets on sale on 22 September at 11 a.m. ET.
Where a Group Can Still Compare
In-network comparison is available. groupRooms.org lists 273 properties in Indianapolis. The platform publishes group savings of 15 to 40 percent below rack rates, no added commission, requests reaching 50 or more hotels, a 24 to 72 hour response time and a group scope of 10 or more rooms. Those are the platform's own published figures.
With the conference pointing at a city directory rather than a block, that comparison is the route to a rate.
