One day of finals and the night in front of it
The ISSMA State Marching Band Finals run on Saturday 7 November 2026 at Lucas Oil Stadium, 500 South Capitol Avenue, Indianapolis. The venue publishes the hours as 9:30 a.m. to 11:59 p.m.
A Saturday championship leaves one night to build. Qualifying bands need Friday 6 November, and that is the night a hotel is asked to hold.
The venue page states that this is the 53rd year of the finals, that 42 Indiana high school bands perform, and that the finals have been held at the stadium every year since it opened. The association's press release states that four State Class Champion bands are crowned at the finals.
No bureau, so a direct negotiation
Groups at this event negotiate with the hotel. The Indiana State School Music Association publishes no housing programme for the finals, and the venue page points to the association's site only for the performance schedule.
The paperwork differs from a bureau event. The band director holds the room count, the room types and the arrival date, and no administrator places the group against a wider block. Music for All publishes a 45-day rooming-list deadline for its own Bands of America Super Regionals at the same stadium. ISSMA publishes no such date, so the deadline for the Friday night is a question for the hotel.
Forty-two bands and the one group purchase
Qualifying runs through Open Class Regionals on 10 October and Open Class Semi-State on 24 October. The four classes perform as B, C, D and A on 7 November. The association's press release puts 176 Indiana high school marching bands across Festival, Scholastic and Open Class this year, and the finals close that season.
Ticket buying is the one place the organiser runs a group purchase. The ticket information sheet states that bands participating in the State Finals have a limited-time opportunity for a group purchase of mobile tickets with no additional fees, arranged through the band director.
Individual admission runs on the same sheet and on the press release. Finals admission is $30.00 for an adult and $25.00 for a student or preschooler. Advance purchase through Ticketmaster adds $7.65 per ticket and caps an order at 50 tickets. Advance purchase in person at the stadium ticket office runs on Fridays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST, with no added fee, by credit card with photo identification matching the card. On the day, the Southeast Ticket Office is the only sales point.
Three rules apply. Tickets are mobile only, purchased tickets are not returnable, and the Clear Bag Policy runs at the stadium.
The night a band needs
The published day runs from 9:30 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. A band performing early holds the Friday night and checks out Saturday morning. A band performing in the evening keeps the same Friday night and leaves after the finals. Both cases produce one night, arriving Friday 6 November and releasing Saturday 7 November.
The single-night shape is the harder one to place. Music for All's housing documents state that one-night groups are the most difficult to place and may take more time. A director who wants the block wants the room count and the room-type mix settled early.
Ask the hotel where its own cutoff sits. A countback from a Friday 6 November arrival reaches Tuesday 22 September at 45 days, and a countback from Saturday 7 November reaches Wednesday 23 September. The association publishes neither date, so the hotel states which one its contract uses.
What to ask the hotel
Ask for the Friday night rate and the Saturday checkout time together. A band performing late wants a late release, and the checkout hour decides whether the group holds the rooms through Saturday afternoon.
Ask for the room-type mix at one property. A director who splits rooms across two buildings loses the supervision the block is meant to deliver.
Ask for bus parking in writing. Music for All's housing policy states that downtown properties charge for overnight vehicle parking and cannot accommodate buses, while suburban properties generally take buses at little or no cost. Ask about breakfast as well, because the same policy states that a downtown property which includes breakfast charges extra for it.
Two figures a director will want are not published. The venue page, the association's finals pages, the press release and the ticket sheet carry no count of field passes and no roll-call time. Ask the association for both before either figure drives a room count.
Sizing the market before the call
The association's press release names its finals sponsors, with Paige's Music as presenting sponsor and Band Shoppe, Silent Command, Music Travel Consultants and SBN Broadcasting Networks as supporting sponsors. The same release names a $1,000 Winners Drink Milk scholarship, funded by the American Dairy Association Indiana and Prairie Farms Dairy and awarded to a student from each of the four champion bands.
The groupRooms directory lists 274 Indianapolis properties as of 23 September 2026, against 103,857+ hotels across 46 states on the platform. The association sits at 100 East Thompson Road, Indianapolis, Indiana 46227, on 317-780-4100.
