Three nights from a Monday arrival
A Monday arrival on September 28 and a Thursday departure on October 1 produce a three-night block: the nights of September 28, 29 and 30. The opening session falls on Tuesday September 29, so the arrival night carries no programme and exists to get the group in place.
That shape is normal for training groups, and it is what makes the pickup curve uneven. Two nights carry the sessions. One night carries the travel.
The arrival night is contested
The Do it Best Corp. Fall Market runs at the same venue from September 25 to September 28, with a forecast attendance of 12,000 on its venue listing. That group checks out as the training group checks in. Monday September 28 therefore carries the most pressure on downtown inventory, and it is the night the programme does not need.
Two more events share the building

Every session room in the building carries a programme for those three days. A training group asking for an early cutoff competes for the same rooms.
How to cut the block
Commit the nights the programme needs and treat the rest separately. Ask for the Tuesday and Wednesday nights as the contracted core, then request the Monday night as an add-on with its own release date. A block built that way can absorb a Monday shortfall.
What to negotiate when the dates are fixed
Push the pickup floor below the 80 percent that the vendor guide publishes as the group-favourable opening position, and argue it from the group's own booking history. Replace a single end-of-stay measurement with rolling review dates. The glossary's rolling-attrition entry releases 20 percent of a block at 90 days, another 10 percent at 60 days, and locks the remainder at 30 days, so rooms the group can already see it will not fill go back while the commitment can still be trimmed.
Set the cutoff as a specific calendar date. The glossary defines the cutoff as the deadline for the final rooming list, typically 21 to 30 days before the event, and states that missing it releases rooms without erasing the pickup commitment. With three events in the building that week, ask whether the cutoff is one date for the block or one date per night.
Read the cancellation ladder next to the attrition clause. The vendor's guide publishes an example of 50 percent of contracted room revenue at 90 to 61 days, 75 percent at 60 to 31 days, and 100 percent inside 30 days. Ask each property for the rate, the deposit schedule and the minimum-stay rule in writing. No Indianapolis source publishes those terms, so they stay questions for the hotel.
Downtown supply and the skywalk
