San Antonio Blocks Start at the Convention Center
The Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center holds 514,000 square feet of contiguous exhibit space, 86,500 square feet of column-free multipurpose space and more than 70 meeting rooms. Its Stars at Night Ballroom covers 54,000 square feet, the largest ballroom in Texas. The building hosts more than 300 events and over 750,000 convention delegates each year (sahbgcc.com).
The groupRooms directory lists 239 bookable hotels in San Antonio (grouprooms.org, September 2026).
What the Revenue Data Says
San Antonio hotels reported about $1.3 billion in trailing room revenue, 2 percent below the prior twelve months. Registry capacity is 44,420 rooms across 450 filing hotels (TexasHotelSearch).
Seven River Walk flagship hotels posted revenue declines of 3.3 to 7.1 percent. The two convention center-anchored houses grew: Marriott Rivercenter 2.3 percent, Grand Hyatt 2.2 percent. The Hill Country resort corridor grew faster and La Cantera led it at 23.7 percent.
How This List Is Ordered
Ten properties are ordered on published room count, meeting space and event space. Capacity figures come from Cvent venue listings, Visit San Antonio and state occupancy tax filings compiled by TexasHotelSearch. Attrition and the cut-off date carry the rest of the cost.

2. JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa, 23808 Resort Parkway
1,002 rooms, the largest inventory in the market, and the market's biggest earner at $85.3 million trailing, down 4.2 percent (TexasHotelSearch). The resort sits in the Hill Country corridor, outside the walkable downtown district. Compare block rates at grouprooms.org.

The Clauses to Read Before You Sign
Attrition, the cut-off date, cancellation and rate protection decide what a block costs. The groupRooms glossary defines the cut-off date as the deadline by which your group members must book inside the block. After that date the hotel releases unclaimed rooms to general inventory. It defines the attrition clause as the minimum share of the block your group must fill, with a penalty for a shortfall.
The cut-off date governs names. The attrition clause governs money. Ask for the cancellation ladder and the rate-protection terms in writing before you sign.
Where to Block for Each Kind of Group
Downtown and the River Walk suit meetings tied to the convention center. The Grand Hyatt sits adjacent to the hall, and both Marriott houses are inside the district. The Hill Country corridor suits resort meetings and team retreats, with the JW Marriott, Signia by Hilton La Cantera and Hyatt Regency Hill Country outside the walkable district.
For weddings, compare the largest single room and the suite count in each house. For team stays, match your peak room count to the house total, then confirm how far ahead the property opens group inventory for your dates.
The Expansion Changes the Next Cycle
Bexar County voters approved Propositions A and B on 4 November 2025. Proposition B funds the downtown arena, projected at $1.2 billion to $1.5 billion, with the county contributing up to $311 million. Proposition A directs up to $192 million to the Frost Bank Center and the Freeman Coliseum. The county hotel occupancy tax rises from 1.75 percent to 2 percent, and the combined rate from all sources is capped at 17 percent (Bexar County Commissioners Court resolution; San Antonio Report).
The convention center expansion is budgeted at $700 million to $900 million from the Project Finance Zone, with construction targeted for 2028. A second convention center hotel is proposed, and city officials removed it from the 2026 priority list (San Antonio Express-News; San Antonio Report).
The expansion is funded and not yet built. The figures above describe the current building. Ask each property about construction disruption on your dates.
